    Discover the province of Friesland

    Friesland waterland

    With more than 10,000 hectares of lakes, ditches and canals, Friesland is the water province of the Netherlands. Its many waterways serve perfectly for a relaxing holiday on or by the water. Especially the Frisian Lakes region, which includes the Sneekermeer and Tjeukermeer lakes, attracts many water sports enthusiasts. Here you can sail by sloop or sailing boat through the typically Dutch landscape. National Park de Alde Faenen and National Park Lauwersmeer are also worth a visit. These wetlands are a popular breeding ground for 100 species of birds, including the great white-tailed eagle. You can enjoy wonderful hiking, cycling, canoeing and skating here.

    The Frisian Eleven Cities

    Whoever thinks of Friesland thinks of that impressive Elfstedentocht. Even without ice-skating, these 11 picturesque towns are worth visiting. Sneek is perhaps the cosiest of them all. Stroll over the historic Waterpoort, sup through the canals and then rest tired but satisfied on one of the bustling terraces. Another must is the photogenic town of Hindeloopen. This town is known for its typical Hindeloopen costumes and painting. Stroll over wooden bridges past characteristic houses and don't forget to look for the blue Lifeboat House.

    UNESCO world heritage

    It just doesn't stop with all this water. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, the Wadden Sea is a unique natural area in its own right. Indeed, it is the largest tidal area in the world. It is also a habitat and stopover for birds, fish and seals. In the Wadden Sea lie the beautiful Wadden Islands, where you can experience a relaxing holiday by the sea. That typical island feeling really gives you a break. Would you like to learn more about the Wadden Sea? Then visit the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center. In this special building near Kornwerderzand, you will learn everything about the history and future of the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer in an interactive way.

    Much more than just water

    Anyone who thinks Friesland consists only of water is wrong. What about the Frisian Woods nature reserve with its beautiful forests, hedgerows, meadows and streams? The Southeast Friesland region is also completely different from the typical image of Friesland. Here you will not find lakes, ditches and the sea, but sand drifts, forests, heaths and moorlands. Do you like the city? Then capital city Leeuwarden is a must. This lively city full of beautiful monuments, cosy shopping streets and lovely canals was European Capital of Culture in 2018.
