Burgundy and cultural enjoyment

Cultural sights, hip designer shops, stately churches and adventurous caves: Maastricht has everything for surprising days out. This city on the Meuse is considered the most European city in the Netherlands. With its many old streets, photogenic facades and atmospheric squares, the city centre is a picture to behold. Stroll along the Meuse River, visit Vrijthof or step inside the imposing Dominican bookshop. Throughout the city you will find many good restaurants and cosy cafés where burgundy is at the forefront. But don't forget the other cities. Roermond, for example. This city offers fantastic shopping at Designer Outlet Roermond, the largest shopping outlet centre in the Benelux. Heerlen is also highly recommended as an outing. In this city, you will find several colourful murals by street artists.

Did you know that no fewer than three National Parks are located in Limburg? De Maasduinen, De Groote Peel and De Meinweg!

Natural Limburg

In Limburg, nature is never far away. Did you know that no fewer than three National Parks are located in Limburg? These are all located in the north of the province. In National Park the Maasduinen you will find the longest river dune belt in the Netherlands. It was formed over thousands of years by an interplay of water, wind and man. National Park de Groote Peel is on the border with North Brabant. Because of its diverse birdlife, this wetland area attracts many bird watchers. Limburg's third National Park is De Meinweg. Here you will find a unique terraced landscape, with steep transitions between the terraces. Geologically, this is very special for the Netherlands. The terraces were partly created over tens of thousands of years by shifts in the earth's crust along the three fault lines that run through the area. One of these fault lines is the well-known Peelrand fault.

Hills and valleys

South Limburg is among the most beautiful regions in the Netherlands. Its green hills and valleys can be found nowhere else in the country. Rolling panoramas, typical half-timbered farmhouses, vineyards, authentic towns and local delicacies: you really feel as if you are abroad! South Limburg has not been declared a National Landscape for nothing; a title that is only reserved for special landscapes. Heuvelland is a protected nature area in South Limburg. Discover this striking piece of the Netherlands through the many walking and cycling routes that criss-cross the countryside. Also be sure to visit Valkenburg, the beating heart of Heuvelland. This little town on the Geul river has been a tourist attraction for over a century and a half. No wonder the first tourist office in the Netherlands was established here in 1885! In the deep south lies another popular attraction: the Drielandenpunt. Here you step right into neighbouring Belgium and Germany.
